Bucky's Bunker - New Office for your Golf Association

December 1, 2009

The ball washers have been put in storage for the winter. Temporary tees are being used at many golf courses where hardy golfers are braving the cold temperatures that will grip Ohioans for the next three or four months.

This is the time of year when people in the golf business concentrate on preparations for the next season.

Steve Jurick, executive director of the Miami Valley Golf Association, is no exception. One of his duties is to assist the MVGA, the Dayton District Women’s Golf Association, the Golf Course Superintendents Association and the Dayton Senior Golfers Association in their planning for 2010.

He also works with the member clubs and courses in organizing their GHIN handicap programs.

Along with his usual responsibilities, Jurick is facing an additional task this year. He is overseeing the move of the MVGA offices to a new location.

After calling the Dayton Country Club home for the last 13 years, the MVGA will be moving its headquarters to Centerville.

As of Feb. 1, the MVGA will be conducting business at 263 Regency Ridge Drive in the Far Hills Office Condominiums. Regency Ridge is an offshoot of Corporate Way, which can be entered from Alexandersville-Bellbrook Road across from the new LA Fitness center.

Jurick said the new location provides the golf associations of Dayton enough space to keep all their equipment at one location, which is not possible at present.

The new location will be more convenient than the current one for at least two other reasons.

It is located near the intersection of routes 48 (Far Hills Avenue) and I-675, and the ground floor office will offer easier access than the DCC space, which has been in an upstairs room.

Jurick said it is probably better that the organization be located at a neutral site other than on the property of a member club so that there can no longer be “an appearance of possible partiality” to the club.

The new headquarters will get a facelift before the golf associations move in.

It is with some mixed feelings that Jurick and the MVGA board leave DCC because the club has been very generous to the golf associations.

Back in 1996, when the MVGA was formed, its first president, Phil Hughes, a DCC member, asked DCC president George Argue if the club would allow the new group to operate out of a vacant room in the clubhouse. He was given the green light, and the MVGA office has been there ever since.

Dayton Country Club did not require the MVGA to pay rent for the space until 2009.

“They’ve been fantastic,” Jurick said of the DCC leaders.
