Kids Follow Directions at Mentors Matters
June 23, 2009

On Tuesday, June 23rd the mentors and kids showed up to some beautiful weather at Rollandia Golf Center.  The day began with each kid learning the basics of chipping.  After some brief instruction, the kids headed over to the driving range and began their practice session.  Despite some early struggles, many of the kids were able to successfully chip the golf balls into the net by the end of practice.  After working up a good sweat, the kids and mentors had pizza for lunch.

After lunch, Scott McGohan gave a presentation.  The message Scott delivered was about the importance of following directions.  In order to help the kids grasp the concept, Scott created an interesting exercise involving assembling a Lego car.  The kids were split up into groups, with some being given a box with a picture of the finished product, while others had directions, and still others had neither a box nor instructions.  Then, each group was asked to work together to quickly put together the cars.  As expected, the groups with instructions performed much better than those lacking instructions.  After completing this exercise, the message seemed to become clear to the kids that listening to trusted guides who offer instruction and advice is very important to their futures.
