Ohio Women's Amateur
- Contributed by Cynthia Pratt

Woods_3x2_New- The Ohio Women's Amateur was contested where it all began 100 years ago:  Scioto Country Club in Columbus.  96 women teed it up on Monday, July 24 and by Thursday afternoon, Gabby Woods was our 2023 Champion!   If Gabby's name sounds familiar, she was the Medalist at the US Women's Amateur Qualifier at Walnut Grove Golf Club on July 13, shooting a 68 to get a chance to tee it up at the US Women's Am at Bel Air Country Club in Los Angeles.   At the Ohio Women's Am, on the newly renovated Donal Ross course, the Monday Stroke Play Qualifying round was played at a 'not for the faint of heart' 6030 yards/par 72.  Gabby shot a 68 to grab the #2 seed (defending champ, Jenn David, got the automatic #1 seed).  Not only was her 68 the best of the field, it was the best ever;  her name goes into Scioto's record books as the lowest round from the Women's Championship tees.

Gabby, who will be a senior at the University of Findlay, faced Xenia's Brynna Mardis in Tuesday's first round match.  She won that match handily at 5&4.  Wednesday morning's round of 16 saw her beat Susan Glasby 4 & 3.  Half an hour after that match ended, she teed it up against Sydney Deal in the quarterfinals, winning 2 & 1.  Thursday morning was a semi-final match against Kary Hollenbaugh, Ohio State sophomore who had an ace on Tuesday.  This was a much anticipated match once the bracket went up and it didn't disappoint;  it came down to the 17th hole where Gabby won, 2 & 1.  Again, only half an hour to rest up and she was back at it in the oppressive heat in the final against Cincinnati player, Eleanor Hudepohl.  Eleanore got the call that she was in the field on Sunday, after a late withdrawal, and came into Scioto sight unseen;  but she took to the course right away, and qualified as the #13 seed.  Unfortunately for her, Gabby Woods was playing championship golf...she had 5 birdies in her first 6 holes.  And while Eleanor was playing very solid golf and hung around all afternoon, Gabby was just too strong, winning the Championship match 3 & 2.

Xenia's Grace Strickland won the Second Flight by defeating Elle Furrow 5 & 3.
