Three Emerge at Moraine to Grab US Amateur Spots

Kettering, Ohio--With the United States Amateur Championship less than a month away, golfers from around the region converged on Moraine Country Club in hopes of winning the right to play in what many consider to be the premier amateur event in the country.

Bellbrook's Jeffrey Scohy earned a spot in the championship by shooting 2-under-par 69 in the second round of the sectional qualifier held at Moraine Country Club. Only three positions were available out of a field of 59.

Scohy's two-round total of 140 tied him for second place with Carrolton's Ben Smith. Ethan Tracy, of Hilliard, grabbed the top spot with a 139 total.

The year's tournament is Aug. 19-23 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

Smith attributed his low scores and consistent play to his putter.

"I putted well," Smith said after receiving news that he had the top score.

Smith added that he felt confident playing the course, which is why he was consistently able to get good shots from the fairway to the green.

Smith looks forward to teeing off at Chambers Bay in August and even has a goal he'd like to accomplish.

"First and foremost, I just want to make the cut," he said. "We'll see where we go from there."
